At the end of the forum ‘FIGHTING RACISM IS UNION BUSINESS: Standing Up To Islamophobia’ the room of at least 100 rose to their feet as they thanked Omar Merhi for his attendance and unending effort to counter racism.

Omar spoke about the impact of his brother’s arrest as a suspected terrorist and the Islamophobia that he and his family have endured, then and now. The panel discussion was part of an all-day union-focused conference held at Victorian Trades Hall Council on 18 October 2014. Omar Merhi is an elected official of the Electrical Trades Union, Victoria.

Omar’s brother Abdullah is one of the 12 men that went on trial in 2008 for numerous terrorism offences. ‘The Trial’ provides insight into Abdullah’s story through Omar, showing the impact of the trial and the backlash on their family.

“Individuals charged with terrorism offences … are entitled to the presumption of innocence and a fair trial. The way our politicians, police and media behave should reflect those fundamental rights,” said Greg Barns this week (22/9/2014).

Greg Barns is a barrister who appeared for one of the accused in the 2008 Melbourne terrorism trial. He is a spokesman for the Australian Lawyers Alliance.

Congratulations to Steven Robinson for his work on ‘The Trial’, which was nominated for Best Editing in a Documentary film at this year’s Australian Screen Editors Awards.

Steven Robinson ASE is an award winning editor who divides his time between documentary, drama, features and television. He won the AFI in 2010 for Best Editing on ‘Inside the Firestorm’ and has been nominated four times for Best Documentary Editing at the Australian Screen Editing Awards winning in 2008 for ‘Choir of Hard Knocks’.

THE TRIAL TO SCREEN AUSTRALIA WIDE

The National premiere of The Trial took place on Tuesday 14 Feb 2012 at 9.30pm on SBS 1. This documentary was unable to screen in Victoria on completion as another trial involving members of the first Benbrika trial was in progress. Now for the first time, this important documentary was seen in the state of Victoria where the Benbrika trial took place.
